A Councillor for Sydney’s Inner West will bring a motion to the first council meeting of the year to commit to not celebrating Australia Day in the future.
The motion would have the council seek advice from local First Nations residents on a ‘more respectful and unifying’ way of celebrating modern multicultural Australia.
The motion is being brought forward by Greens Councillor Tom Kiat, who says a large increase in attendance at the local Invasion Day rally had pushed him to advocate for the change.
Last year a number of Melbourne councils voted to no longer refer to January 26 as Australia Day, sparking backlash from the Federal Government.
Councillor Kiat says he is unconcerned about the possibility of angering federal politicians.
