Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull continues to face backlash as he defends his decision to reject the proposed Indigenous voice to Parliament as recommended within the Uluru Statement.
PM Malcolm Turnbull last month rejected the Referendum Council’s key recommendation to establish an Indigenous advisory body, saying it was neither “desirable nor capable of winning acceptance” in a referendum.
Speaking over the weekend, Turnbull said an Indigenous Voice to Parliament would have been “contrary to the principles of equality and citizenship” and the model put forward by the council was “not desirable.”
Co-Chair of the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples and Yamatji man Rod Little says it goes against previous statements made by Turnbull.
Assistant Health Minister and Yamatji man Ken Wyatt remains optimistic.
