Former members of the now disbanded Referendum Council have called on the government to turn its attention to constitutional reform.
The calls come five months after the Uluru Statement from the Heart was delivered following the constitutional convention held in Uluru.
The statement called for a referendum to establish a First Nations advisory body and treaties commission.
Noel Pearson says he is angry there has been almost no political or community reaction to the statement, and believes until the agenda “gets owned by White Australia” it will not advance.
Following the release of the statement in May, the Prime Minister warned constitutional change would be “very difficult” while opposition leader Bill Shorten – also noncommittal – said politicians should keep an “open mind.”
