There are reports of people being turned away from dialysis units in the Northern Territory, highlighting a nursing shortage.

One of those reportedly turned away is Stephen Goodall.

He has written a letter to NT Health, as seen by the ABC, saying he has had appointments cancelled due to no available staff.

Secretary of the Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Cath Hatcher says the nursing shortage needs to be addressed.

Mr Goodall also says that he saw nine patients diverted from the dialysis unit to the emergency department of the Royal Darwin Hospital.

Ms Hatcher says people need to be trained specifically to care for dialysis patients.
