A medical advisor for the national peak for First Nations health says communities in Western Australia need to more than double the amount of vaccines being administered ahead of the boarders opening.

Dr Jason Agostino from the National Community Controlled Health Organisation says Western Australia’s success at keeping COVID 19 out of the state has led to complacency among the population, and along with the spread of misinformation, it has led to lagging vaccination rates.

The WA Government announced this week that restrictions will ease in February and some residents have called for their community to remain shut.

Dr Agostino says COVID vaccines are the main defence against the virus and that locking down individual communities doesn’t work against the new variants.
