The Greens are calling for the Indigenous Advancement Strategy to be scrapped following news that one of Australia’s biggest companies received a large sum of the Indigenous dedicated funding on the eve of the last federal election.

As reported by online publication New Matilda, the Morrison Government approved a $15 million grant for Wesfarmers on May 17, the day before Australians went to the poll.

The purpose of the grant was for helping the company improve employment outcomes for Indigenous people, however it was classified as “Closed – Non-Competitive”, meaning other corporations could not bid for the money.

The Greens spokesperson for Indigenous affairs, Rachel Siewert says big corporations shouldn’t be accepting funding from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.

Ms Siewert says they will be looking into is at the next Senate estimates.
