Former Don Dale detention centre inmate Dylan Voller has announced his intention to run for a seat on the Alice Springs town council.

Voller’s treatment at the detention centre was brought to national attention earlier this year when footage of him shackled and spit hooded was aired on an ABC Four Corners report.

He told the ABC he hopes to use his experience within the system to help find long-term solutions to youth crime in the town.

In the Northern Territory candidates running for local government are not required to declare criminal convictions and are only disqualified if they are currently serving a prison sentence of more than one year.
