In the Northern Territory a Labor member for the central electorate of Stuart says his constituents are “deeply concerned” over remote police stations which are no longer staffed.
Last month the ABC revealed that of the 18 new police stations established during the Intervention, five are no longer staffed by permanent police.
Labor MP Scott McConnell says the lack of policing for some communities has left people confused and disappointed – with some raising concerns about how to prevent alcohol being brought into communities.
Earlier in the year NT Labor leader Michael Gunner pledged 120 additional fulltime police officers for the Territory.
Mr McConnell says people want to know what the long term future is for remote police stations – some of which are still in temporary facilities such as demountables and shipping containers.
