A new online map highlighting massacres of First Nations people on the east coast has been launched by the University of Newcastle.

So far the map has details of over 150 conflicts between 1790 and 1870 and includes information such as times, dates, approximate locations as well as who and how many people were affected.

Some entries also include a narrative derived from various historical sources.

Professor Lyndall Ryan from the university says gathering the evidence has taken a long time and hopes over time more and more sites will be added.

She says unfortunately many sites have been lost.
