AAP- A Referendum Council leader has urged politicians to wait for its final recommendations on how best to recognise indigenous people before speculating on the prospects of success.

A national indigenous summit at Uluru last week rejected a symbolic acknowledgement in the constitution in favour of bold structural reforms including an elected body to advise on legislation.

In response, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull cautioned that Australians were “constitutionally conservative”.

Referendum Council co-chair Mark Leibler says the suggestions are part of a bigger picture the council will take into account when it reports to political leaders In June.
