Indigenous ranger programs across the country have rallied behind a national campaign calling on the Federal government to double their funding to boost job numbers.
The Country Needs People Alliance wants the programs, which currently provide jobs for more than 2000 First Nation’s people, to have increased funding by 2020.
Campaign spokesperson Patrick O’Leary says they have calculated that they would need 5000 workers to deal with the scale of fire problems, feral pigs and cats, and weeds.
Director of the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation woman Nyaparu Rose says their ranger program in the Pilbara has provided more than ten jobs for men and women in their community.
Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion says the government would not speculate on what funding would be contained in the next budget.
