The First Nations community on Queensland’s Stradbroke Island, or Minjerribah, gathered over the weekend calling for consultation and transparency on any new developments for the island.

The meeting, attended by around 200 people, was called in response to a development proposal by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron who acquired land at Adams Beach on the west coast of North Stradbroke.

The sailing club has reportedly applied to have the area rezoned with the intention of undertaking sailing classes and regattas in a move they say will boost tourism in the region.

While locals invite tourism initiatives following the announced end to mining on the island, they want the community to be openly consulted.

One of the meeting’s organisers and Quandamooka woman Natalie Mazzoni says they aren’t ruling the clubs proposal out, but the community hasn’t had a chance to scrutinise initiative.
