First Nation’s fishermen in Sydney have regained their cultural fishing practices at Botany Bay 35 years after it was banned.

NSW Fisheries are allowing a group of Bidgigal fishermen to practice net hauling mullet up until the end of April.

Fishermen will be allowed to catch a total of 100 boxes of mullet at 25-30 kilograms a box.

The mullet will be handed out to the community and delivered to people such as the elderly who are unable to come and collect the fish themselves.

Fisherman Trevor Walker says the practice is about the regeneration of culture and a reuniting of the community, and hopes it will be allowed to become an annual tradition.
