Scientists from Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden will set off on three fundraising journeys across NSW this weekend, in a bid to raise awareness and funds for threatened plant species.
Three teams will walk more than 300 kilometres in an effort to collect seeds from 11 at risk plant species.
The seeds will be preserved at the Australian PlantBank at Mount Annan’s Botanic Garden, which already contains more than 100 million seeds and more than 50 per cent of the threatened species in NSW.
The walkers are trying to raise at least $44,000 to fund the Save a Species initiative, which has been running for several years.
Supervisor at the Botanic Garden Michael Elgey says the initiative started out as a discussion between friends over how to raise money for plant conservation.
