Aboriginal singer-songwriter Naomi Wenitong has been named as the official Ambassador for the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair for 2021.
Naomi is a Kubi Kubi woman who now calls Cairn’s home, after growing up in Newcastle, and is well known for her work with R&B duo Shakaya and the hip hop group The Last Kinection – not to mention her solo work as a performer.
Naomi told Bumma Bippera Media that she has been developing a program to help the local youth to become self-sufficient artists.
“Naytive mentorship is a 10-week intensive program, designed to encourage self-sufficient artists, and develop artists here in Cairns – with the youth here,” Ms Wenitong said.
She said the program has been in the works for a few years now, and to have it finally realised is a dream come true.
“I’d really love to be able to do this for our Mob, for everyone here.”
The Kubi Kubi woman said training she received in Orlando, Florida when she was younger inspired her to create Naytive Mentorship.
“To pass on all the knowledge that I’ve learnt over these years.”
The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair will be held from the 17th to the 22nd of August.
