Three charged over fatal Sydney stabbing

Two teenagers and a 20-year-old man have been charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of another teenager in Sydney’s southwest overnight.

Police say an 18-year-old found with multiple stab wounds in Panania yesterday evening later died of his injuries in hospital.

The 20-year-old and an 18-year-old have been refused bail and will appear at Bankstown Local Court today, while a 17-year-old has also been refused bail and is due to front Parramatta Children’s Court.

 

 

Turnbull to talk trade with Biden

Billions of dollars worth of trade will be on the agenda for US Vice President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull when they meet in Sydney for talks later today.

Mr Biden arrived in Sydney on Monday for a three-day stay after visiting Melbourne. During his stay he will meet Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, tour a $1.5 billion Navy warship, and dine with Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove.

Mr Biden’s trip wraps up tomorrow with a major policy speech at Paddington Town Hall. He then flies on to New Zealand.

 

Turnbull’s new ministry to be sworn inmalcolm-turnbull-close-the-gap-2

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s new-look ministry will be sworn in by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove later today.

Mr Turnbull stuck mostly with the same team of ministers he took to the federal election but appointed several new roles, including designating Christopher Pyne defence industry minister. That gives him oversight of the nation’s naval ship building, including the $50 billion future submarine program.

 

Two seriously injured in NSW shooting

A man is fighting for his life and a woman is seriously injured in hospital after a shooting at a home in the west of New South Wales.

Police say the 53-year-old woman had suffered multiple gunshot wounds when she was found at the Coonabarabran home on Monday night while the 57-year-old man had been shot once.

The pair, who were known to each other, were airlifted to St George Hospital where the man is in a critical condition.

 

 

Lindt cop set for second day of grilling sydney-siege-lindt-cafe

The senior policeman who sent officers storming into Sydney’s Lindt Cafe after hostage Tori Johnson was executed is set to face a second day of questioning when an inquest into the stand-off continues this morning.

The commander, who can’t be named, told a coroner yesterday that sending police into the cafe, where he believed Man Haron Monis was holding hostages with a shotgun and backpack bomb, was one of the hardest moments of his 35-year police career. The forward commander described closing his eyes and bracing for shock waves from an explosion after sending his officers in.

Monis was killed in a spray of bullets when officers burst into the stronghold at 2.13am on December 16. Hostage Katrina Dawson also died after being hit by fragments of police bullets.

 

 

Qld men use esky and chair to stay afloat

Two men who used an esky and a chair to stay afloat after a capsize have prompted Gold Coast police to warn boaties to take a safety equipment check, which should include life jackets, flares, and emergency beacons.

Yesterday afternoon, the men got into trouble when their 4.5m runabout boat capsized coming in over Jumpinpin Bar near South Stradbroke Island.

The 43-year-old and 39-year-old clung to the boat for a couple of hours before it started sinking. One man grabbed an esky and the other a chair before they swam to shore. Neither sustained injuries.

 

Vic Liberal to be punished over theftcourtroom-gavel-royal-commission-justice

Former Victorian Liberal party state director Damien Mantach could face jail time when he is sentenced later today for taking more than $1.5 million from party coffers.

Mantach pleaded guilty in May to 15 charges of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage and has been behind bars since late 2015. He is due to be sentenced in the Victorian County Court later today.

The 42-year-old used fake invoices for work that was never done to take $1,558,913 from the party’s coffers between 2010 and 2015.
