A Traditional Owner group in Victoria has signed a mining agreement that is being hailed as a new equitable approach.
Djara, the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, met with Canadian company Agnico Eagle Mines to sign an agreement for gold mined at Fosterville Gold Mine.
While the financial details haven’t been released, the deal includes other benefits including employment.
It will also include some influence over environmental impacts and remediation of the land.
Djara chair Rebecca Phillips told the ABC the agreement was about a way of including Djaara people in the resource use of our country and a way for our people and our country to benefit from that.
She says it was a way where we could meet together and talk about how this could be done in a more fair and equitable way.
